Apoptotic peptidase activating factor 1 (APAF1) is a gene that encodes a cytoplasmic protein that functions in the initiation of apoptosis. The protein also aids in the formation of an apoptosome that binds and cleaves procaspase 9 into its activated form. Missense mutations, nonsense mutations, silent mutations, and frameshift deletions and insertions are observed in cancers such as endometrial cancer, intestinal cancer, and stomach cancer.
